For decades, the national perception of the Gold Coast was linear: tourism, construction, and a reliable surf break. If you were doing business here, it was assumed you were either building a high-rise or selling a holiday.

But those of us operating on the ground -scaling companies, sitting on boards, and advising high-growth ventures – know that the narrative has shifted. The Gold Coast is no longer just Australia’s playground; it is fast becoming its engine room for innovation, health, and advanced manufacturing.

As a specialist in corporate advisory at Lawnch, and through my work with the Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce, I am seeing the data and the business growth firsthand. The city is growing up, and for business owners looking to enter this market, the opportunities are as deep as they are diverse.

As someone who is absolutely passionate about supporting the growth of businesses that choose to base themselves here, I know how important it is to build out your networks. Not just from a new business perspective, but equally as importantly to access the knowledge and support that founders and executives require as they seek to run their companies.

I also know that for some it can be a little daunting to find out the who/what/when/where and why around business networking on the Gold Coast – especially for recent arrivals.

That is why I thought it would be worthwhile to build out this ‘insider’s guide’ to the current state of the city and, crucially, who you need to know to succeed here.

The Economic Snapshot: A $45 Billion Reality

The numbers tell a story of rapid maturity. According to the City of Gold Coast’s State of the City Summary Report, our economy is outpacing state and capital city benchmarks.

  • Gross Regional Product (GRP): We have hit $45.38 billion, with a growth rate of 3.0%, outperforming both Queensland (2.4%) and Greater Brisbane.
  • The Talent Magnet: Our population is tracking toward 1 million by 2040, but it’s not just retirees moving north. We have seen an influx of skilled migration, adding over 17,600 full-time equivalent jobs recently.
  • Diversification: While tourism remains vital, the report highlights that sectors like technology, sport, screen, and professional services are rapidly catching up to our legacy pillars.

This is a nimble economy. The data shows we bounce back from shocks faster than our capital city counterparts, driven by a wave of small-to-medium enterprises that are digitising and scaling up.

The “Black Book”: Who to Know and Where to Go

The Gold Coast operates on relationships and is actually a very supportive place to run and grow a business due to this. This big city with a small town ‘heart’- element means that six degrees of separation is usually two degrees here. This means that if you are launching or expanding, you don’t need to do this in a silo.

Here is how to navigate the local networks based on your business stage and location:

1. The Powerhouses (Chambers of Commerce)

If your focus is advocacy, policy, and B2B connections, the Chambers are your first port of call.

  • Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce (SGC): As a committee member here, I may be biased, but the energy at the southern end is fantastic at the moment. Covering the region from Tallebudgera to Coolangatta, we focus heavily on connectivity and “strengthening community” for businesses that want a voice in the city’s growth corridor. sgc.org.au
  • Gold Coast Central Chamber: The heavy lifter for the heart of the city (Surfers Paradise, Southport, Broadbeach). They are arguably the most influential lobby group for major infrastructure and policy shifts. goldcoastcentralchamber.com.au
  • Gold Coast North Chamber (GCNCC): Essential for businesses operating in the northern growth corridor, where much of the city’s manufacturing and logistics hubs are expanding. gcncc.org.au
  • Mudgeeraba Chamber: Known as the “green behind the gold,” this is a tight-knit community. If you are a local business in the hinterland, this is where you find your tribe. mudgeerabachamber.org
  • Southport Chamber: “As the city’s oldest business network (est. 1912), the Southport Chamber is the dedicated voice for the Gold Coast’s official CBD. While other chambers focus on broader regions, SCOC is laser-focused on the unique challenges and opportunities of the Southport precinct.

2. The Next Generation

  • Young Professionals Gold Coast (YPGC): This isn’t just for grads. YPGC attracts the city’s ambitious rising executives (under 35s) who are hungry for mentorship and career acceleration. Their “Ambitious, Connected, Healthy” pillars resonate with the modern leader. ypgc.com.au
  • Gold Coast Junior Chamber (GCJCC): another vital touchpoint for future leaders aged 18-35 to upskill and network. gcjcc.com.au

3. The Connectors and Scalers

  • Synergy Boards: For business owners who feel isolated at the top. This is peer-to-peer advisory at its best, helping founders navigate the transition from “small business” to “scale-up.” synergyboards.com.au
  • Professionals Hub: Founded during the pandemic to keep connectivity alive, this has morphed into a genuine community for those who value meaningful professional relationships over transactional card-swapping. professionalshub.com.au

The Innovation Ecosystem: Where to Build

If you are a tech founder or running a high-growth startup, the landscape has changed dramatically in the last five years.

  • Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct (GCHKP): This is our $5 billion answer to Silicon Valley. Anchored by Griffith University and the University Hospital, it is the zone for deep tech, AI, and biotech. gchkp.com.au
  • Cohort Innovation Space: Located within the GCHKP, this is the city’s dedicated launchpad. It’s not just coworking; it’s labs, podcast studios, and a collision point for scientists and entrepreneurs. cohortspace.com.au
  • Gold Coast Innovation Hub: Essential for investment readiness. Their programs help founders prep for capital raises and navigate the startup lifecycle and its location at Southern Cross University’s Gold Coast Airport Campus makes it a handy base.
  • Currents Community: To keep your finger on the pulse, this is the media platform and community tracking the local tech scene. currentscommunity.com

The Government Support Layer

Finally, understanding the public sector architecture is crucial for support and investment. The City of Gold Coast is fast becoming recognised for its proactive support for the region’s business community and these three entities (Council itself, and its offshoots) are the main touchpoints for those looking for information, access to government support or an understanding of its global positioning.

  • City of Gold Coast: The operational backbone offering various business incentives. goldcoast.qld.gov.au/Home
  • Invest Gold Coast: The entity responsible for attracting major capital and business investment into the region. investgoldcoast.com
  • Brand Gold Coast: The storytellers who are reshaping the city’s global identity. brandgoldcoast.com

The Verdict

The Gold Coast is open for business, but it rewards those who show up. It is a city that values face-to-face connection and community contribution. Whether you are looking to tap into the Health & Knowledge Precinct or need the advocacy of the Southern Chamber, the infrastructure is here.

At Lawnch, we help businesses navigate this exact landscape to scale effectively. My advice? Don’t just set up an office here – join the community. The beach is a great bonus, but the business network is the main event.
